What is the state’s motto? ______________________________________________________
The state of Washington is often confused with Washington D.C., which is the United States capitol. Make sure that you don’t mix these two up. Washington is on the west coast with Oregon to the south, Idaho to the east, and Canada (the Province of British Columbia) to the north. If you want to sound more like an American when you speak English, then call the state ‘Washington’ and the US capitol ‘D.C.’!
After the US bought the Louisiana territory from the French in 1803, two men, Lewis & Clark, took a team of explorers from present day Illinois all the way to the west coast where Washington is today. Along with Lewis & Clark’s crew was a Shoshone Native American woman named Sacajawea. She assisted in translation and guidance of the journey a few times. You can still walk parts of the trail today at the Lewis and Clark Trail State Park.
If you would like to enjoy city life in Washington, then you should visit Seattle. It is the largest city in the state with about 3.5 million people in the metro area. The city is on the water and the skyline features the famous Space Needle, a 605 foot (184 meter) tall observation tower. There is a restaurant at the top of the tower and it rotates so that you get a full view of the city while you eat! If you’re not feeling hungry, then you can just enjoy the observation deck to get a great view of the city.
Seattle also has a few professional sports teams if you’d like to watch a game. The Mariners are their MLB (Major League Baseball) team, the Seahawks are their NFL (National Football League) team, the Sonics are their NBA (National Basketball Association) team, and the Storm is the WNBA (Women’s National Basketball) team. Safeco Field, where the football and baseball teams play, can seat up to 47,860 people.
