What is the state’s motto? ______________________________________________________
Montana is the forth largest state in the United States. North and South Dakota are to the east, Wyoming is to the south, and Idaho is to the west/southwest, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan are to the north. Despite its size, the entire state of Montana has very few people in it.
There is a rich Native American culture in Montana and we’ll read about “A Day in the Life of a Tribal Drummer” to get an idea about one tribe’s culture.
“In these mountains, there’s a lot of resources that the Blackfoot people used. A lot of medicines, a lot of herbs, a lot of berries, and the animals were used not only for our ceremonies, but in everyday life. They were used to make these drums that we use to carry out our songs. Before there were medals, a warrior was honored with song.
Singing is part of spiritual experience, part ceremony, and part emotional release too. The songs connect the people with the land. The songs tell the history of our people. I sing everyday, all day, whether I’m in a meeting or driving home. When I’m driving home my dash board gets beat really bad, because I sing as hard as I can. It’s a release. It takes you to a better place when you feel comfortable. It doesn’t matter where I’m at in Montana. I always feel like this is home.”
Montana is a state for the summer, outdoor adventurer. There are also sixteen ski areas for the winter adventurer. If you really want to see what the United States was like before European settlers came, then you should definitely visit Montana.
