People are always wondering where South Dakota is. The state is located in the middle of the United States. North Dakota is to the north; Nebraska is to the south; Iowa and Minnesota are to the east; and Wyoming and Montana are to the west. These states are usually better known than South Dakota.
Most people don’t talk about the state itself, but they talk about Mount Rushmore when they come to visit. Mount Rushmore is the best known attraction in South Dakota. The Mount Rushmore National Memorial is located in the west of South Dakota in the Black Hills. It portrays the faces of four former presidents of the United States: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. It took from 1927 to 1941 to carve the faces of the presidents in the stone.
Another famous monument in the Blacks Hills is the Crazy Horse Memorial, which shows the famous tribe leader Crazy Horse sitting on a horse. When he was still alive, he led the “Lakota” Native American tribe. Today, South Dakota still has one of the biggest Native American populations of all the states of the United States.
Native Americans are the minority of the population. The majority of the population (87%; 2010 US Census) is made up of white Americans. Half of the population of South Dakota lives in the countryside. The other half lives in small towns or in the three major cities of Sioux Falls, Pierre, or Rapid City.
In my opinion, if you want to see the most beautiful sunsets, then you have to come to South Dakota. While driving down Interstate I-90, which goes right through South Dakota, the beautiful landscape overwhelms you. It is very peaceful and calm in South Dakota. Sometimes you can see buffalo or other animals on the sides of the roads as well as huge fields that belong to a farm even further away. To sum it up, the peace you can find here and the beautiful landscape are what make South Dakota unique.
