What is the state’s motto? ______________________________________________________

West Virginia became a state when it decided to break away from the slave states during the American Civil War. Pennsylvania borders West Virginia to the northwest, Maryland is to the north/northwest, Virginia is to the south/southeast, Kentucky is to the southwest, and Ohio is to the northwest.

As an important state in the American Civil War, West Virginia has some amazing historical attractions. This year, 2012, marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, which lasted for four years and cost the lives of 600,000 people. The West Virginia Reenactors Association is a group of people dedicated to recreating the events of the Civil War. You can go watch these reenactments in many places across West Virginia.

If you believe in ghosts, then West Virginia would be a good place to visit for you. There are around 14 different haunted sights to experience in the state. If you visit the town of Point Pleasant, you can search for the Mothman. You can also potentially experience hauntings at the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. This asylum was opened in 1864 and operated up until 1994. People say that they have experienced unexplainable voices and sounds as well as ghost sightings here.

If you’re not into ghosts and love the outdoors, then West Virginia still has something for you. The New River Gorge National River is a great place to go hiking, whitewater rafting, and check out the famous 3,030 foot (924m) long New River Gorge Bridge, which is 876 feet (267m) above the New River. If you’re looking for something more advanced than hiking, then you can go rock climbing. There are routes that range from 30-120 feet (9-36.5m) in height.
