When I think of Colorado, I think of all the summer vacations I spent there with my family when I was a child. I’m from Kansas, which is to the east of Colorado. If you time the drive from my hometown to Colorado just right, then you can watch the sun set on the mountains when you get there. I wonder if the drive from Nebraska (to the northwest), Wyoming (to the north), Utah (to the west), or New Mexico (to the south) is just as beautiful.
The Rocky Mountain Range cuts through the western half of Colorado. This state has the range’s highest mountain, Mount Elbert, which is 14,440 feet (4,800 m) tall. Colorado has 54 “fourteeners”, or mountains that are over 14,000 feet (4,300 m) tall. One of these 14ers is called Pike’s Peak, which is at a height of 14,115 feet (4,302 m). Visitors can hike up, drive up, or take a cog train up the to the top. If you are thinking about hiking up it, then make sure you are well-trained, because this 12 mile (19.3 km) hike is not easy!
Our family vacation usually took us to the tiny town of Grand Lake. The town is on Colorado’s largest, deepest natural lake and is just west of the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. It’s a great place for family activities. Most of the activities, like Lilliputt Mini Golf, are on the town’s main street, Grand Avenue. You can also rent paddle boats for the lake or play games in the arcade.
If you’re more into city travel, you should check out Boulder, Colorado. It has a large university and is a city full of youth. There are a few free tours that you can go on there. I really enjoyed taking a tour of the Celestial Seasonings Tea Company. The smells were amazing! If you love fresh food, the I would suggest the Boulder County Farmers’ Market. It’s open starting on the first Saturday of April until the third Saturday in November.
