New Mexico is a state of the Old Wild West and its culture has strong Native American and Hispanic influences. About 36% of people in New Mexico do not even speak English at home (2010 US Census). About 36% of the people in New Mexico actually speak Spanish at home!
One of the most famous attractions for Native American culture is Mesa Verde National Park. “Cliff Palace”, an ancient site of the Pueblo Native American tribe, has about 200 rooms and built between 1190 and 1260 AD. The people who used to live here left around 1300 AD and the exact reason is not known. New Mexico has a big area of desert and is very dry. This leads people to think that the Pueblos left “Cliff Palace” because of a major drought.
Another attraction New Mexico has is the “Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta”! This ‘fiesta‘ (‘party’ or ‘celebration’ in Spanish) happens every year in early October and features 750 balloons. The sky is filled with colorful hot air balloons as pilots from around the world take off into the sky. After a long day of balloon flying and watching, the festival also has a big, bright fireworks show.
New Mexico is also known as being a place of supernatural or alien activity. There are many UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) sightings every year here. The city of Roswell is famous for the 1947 “UFO crash” outside of the city. Some people believe that the US government didn’t want people to know about it, so they hid information for the public. Even if you don’t believe in aliens, you can still go to the “Roswell UFO Festival” that takes place in July each year. People dress up as aliens, listen to guest speakers, and watch parades.
New Mexico is much more than just deserts and heat. Go and see for yourself!
