What is the state’s motto? ______________________________________________________
Hawaii is a very unique state! It’s a state born of fire and some of the most active volcanoes on the planet are here. Hawaii also has the world’s tallest sea mountain, Mauna Kea, which stands 13,796 feet (4,205 m) high! Some of the typical things from Hawaii include: surfing, hula dancing, and sunny beaches. There are 137 total islands and the six major islands that make up Hawaii are: Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and the Big Island (Hawaii).
These islands each have something special to offer and there are 53 state parks and 8 national parks on the islands. One of the most famous national parks is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The volcano of Kilauea is more than 4,000 feet (1,219 m) high and is still growing. It is the ‘younger brother’ to the 13,679 foot (4,169 m) tall Mauna Loa. There, you can see volcano eruptions from a safe distance almost everyday.
There are two official languages in the state of Hawaii. Those languages are English and Hawaiian. English is dominant and some people fear that Hawaiian is in danger of dying out completely. One of the most famous Hawaiian words is “aloha”. It means ‘hello’, ‘goodbye’, and ‘I love you’ all in one word. Native Hawaiians have a very rich, interesting culture! If you visit, be sure to attend one of the many hula festivals!
