US Sports: Baseball

Baseball

Baseball is said to be America’s most famous pastime. One of the reasons for this is the fact that baseball is played everyday of the week from the beginning of April until the end of September. Each team plays a total of 162 games in a season!

Another great reason American’s love baseball is due to the way that players can make it into the league. MLB (Major League Baseball) has farm teams. These teams are independently owned, but are still under control of their respective MLB teams. Young players as well as recovering older players can work on their abilities and eventually make it (back) to the big leagues.

The flow of the game is incredibly relaxed and fluid. If you’re watching it on TV, then this makes commercial breaks seem like less of a drag. Players take a short amount of time to switch between fielding and batting and there’s even the famous “7th Inning Stretch”, where the fans get up, stretch, and sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”.

Baseball is one of America’s greatest family experiences. There’s nothing like getting everyone together for an afternoon of hanging out at the ballpark. The atmosphere there is relaxed and you might even catch a home run ball! Also, since it’s mostly played during the summer months, it’s often the best time of the year weather wise to be outside.

“There is no ‘I’ in team”. Baseball is most definitely a team sport. Everyone has to put in their fair share of work and a game changing moment can come to any player at any time. Players are evaluated with the same kinds of statistics, which allows each and every player to have the chance at being the best of all players.

The playoff series is also a special part of baseball. Teams play against each other in a battle of seven games. This not only keeps the fans interested, but it also tests the teams over several days in several ways. No single pitcher can carry a team through it. No team has an over powering home field advantage. Every team has to fight through the fatigue through the consecutive seven game streak.

Baseball is a big part of American history. A variation of the game, rounders, was first played int the mid-18th century in England. However, the first game on record was played in the US in 1846. This makes baseball over 150 years old! As far as the players are concerned, it is said that they are not simply idols in the sports world. They become household names and, in some cases, they become legends.
