American Superstitions

Some people in the US are very superstitious and some think that it is all non-sense. Here are a few examples of common superstitions in the US. Are there superstitions in your country?
 
A Black Cat
Black cats have a bad reputation in the States. If a black cat crosses your path, then it is said that you will have bad luck. 
Breaking a Mirror
It is said that if you break a mirror, then you’ll have bad luck. Lots of people say that you will have bad luck for 7 years! 
Friday the 13th
Friday the 13th is the most popular superstition in the States. People think that Friday the 13th is bad in all kinds of ways. “Nothing good can happen on Friday the 13th”. It is said to be an especially bad day to start something new (i.e. relationship, business, project, etc).
Opening an Umbrella Inside
It is said that opening an umbrella indoors is a bad omen. People that do this are said to have bad luck come their way soon.
Walking Under a Ladder
This is another very common superstition in the States. Never walk under a ladder!
Stepping on a Crack
This is also said to bring people bad luck. Some children even say “step on a crack, break your mama’s back” to tease other children about stepping on cracks.
Throwing Salt
If you spill salt, then you are supposed to throw some over your left shoulder. If you do, then the bad omens will be sent away.
Check Your Necklace
If you necklace has been turned around from wearing it, then that is said to mean that someone is thinking about you in a good way. Also, if your ear itches, then that means that someone is talking about you.
