Types of Social Networking

Facebook: Mark Zuckerberg, before FB went public on the stock market, was quoted at being worth $17.5 billion. 
Twitter: Used to communicate between people or simply to the (Twitter) world 140 characters at a time.  
YouTube Channels: similar to a TV channel, a user uploads his/her own videos to their channel, which creates a user created programming.
Blogs: Like this one!

The Main Parts of Facebook

The Wall: (OR Timeline if the user has converted to Timeline already. This conversion is inevitable to all users) Your own personal site. There are many thing that people can share on other peoples’ walls, which are viewable to that person’s friends unless otherwise specified in the Privacy Settings.

a) Links: websites, YouTube videos, blog links, etc. 
b) Photos
c) Wall messages
d) Status Update: users can talk about everything from what they are doing at the moment to describing their feeling or sharing their opinions for all or some of Facebook to see. 

About: users can input information about themselves that they want to share.

News Feed: users can see random posts from friends. This is the first thing users see when the log-in to Facebook.

a) Messages: essentially Facebook email.
b) Chat: instant chat with friends online. Video chat is also available.

Groups: tailor made for the interest of the user. Some groups are closed to members only and others are open to the public.

Events: users can, for example, invite their friends to a party. 

Photos: users can make albums to share with their friends.

Poke: the poke function sends someone a notification that someone else has virtually poked them. Ask your students if they use this and if they do, ask them why they use this.

Games: users can play games on Facebook.

LIKE button: users can show that they like something (i.e. a photo, a comment, a post, a group, etc.) by pressing the LIKE button.
Notifications: users are notified if something has been shared on their wall, if they were invited to a group or event, to play a game, if someone “LIKEs” their posts/photos/etc. 

Security Settings: users can protect themselves from third party information sharing, they can prevent someone from being able to see parts (or all) of their Facebook profile, etc.
